How Ruger got discovered

Everything you know about how Ruger got discovered and signed to his former label is wrong!!

In 2024, Ruger took to Twitter (now X), venting his frustration and calling out his former label boss, D'Prince, for us!ng and abandoning him. Revealing that it was actually Tunde Ednut who discovered him, not D'Prince.

Before all this, back in 2021, D'Prince signed Ruger. According to the story, Ruger used to be a mechanic in Lagos, working in Computer Village, fixing phones. During his free time, he would freestyle and post his videos on Instagram. Thanks to the internet, his talent was eventually noticed.

One day, Ruger received a direct message from D'Prince, who was in the U.S. with Rema on tour. D'Prince told Ruger that he would be back soon and wanted to work with him. Ruger was so excited, he had to sleep and wake up to make sure he wasn’t dreaming. His sister, who was using his phone at the time, confirmed it wasn't a dream—D'Prince messaged again, saying he was coming.

What convinced Ruger that D'Prince was serious was the fact that he didn’t even wait to get home. As soon as D'Prince landed at the airport, he called Ruger to come to the studio. That moment sparked their bond, and Ruger was signed to Jonzing World, a label under Mavin Records, the same team behind Rema. But in 2023, after nearly three years, Ruger left the label, changing his label name from "Jonzing World" to "Blown Boy Entertainment."

By February 2024, Ruger took to Instagram to clarify that it was Tunde Ednut, not D'Prince, who discovered him. He wrote, "Now that I’m free to speak, I want to specially thank @mazitundeednut for being the first to discover me before passing me to the Prince. God bless you, king maker."

While no one knew exactly what happened behind the scenes, it was clear things weren't right. When Ruger released a freestyle titled "Blown Boy," the line, "I denounce every loyalty to some godfather (D'Prince), this year is about me," hinted at his frustration.

Around the same time on X, he tweeted, “I’m grateful that Jonzing World introduced me to the world, but I couldn’t stay because they got too comfortable with the money they were making off me. They weren’t pushing me as much as I wanted. We were supposed to renegotiate the contract, but I couldn’t imagine five more years without action. They were using my money to fund new artists while leaving me in the dark. I just laugh. How’s it looking now?”

No new artist under the label has reached Ruger’s level of success. Could what have happened between Ruger and D'Prince be catching up with the label as karma?
